Sebring is a challenge at the best of times, but throw in changing weather, an incoming hurricane, and exotic race cars made for a quite a combination. No matter the series...Sebring International Raceway always brings the best out of the cars and the drivers.
The 3rd race on the IMSA endurance calendar is also the shortest at 6 hours. This track has seen everything from Formula 1 to NASCAR to IMSA, and pretty much everything in between, but this was the last time these mountains will hear the roar of the DPi V8's. The supporting cast were there in full force too...Mazda Miata's, Porsche Carrera's, and Lambo Bulls...oh my.
2022 brought the return of "Super Sebring"...the combination of 1000 miles (or 8 Hours) of World Endurance Championship cars [European] and the IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring in the same weekend. This year was special because it previewed the LMdH (Le Mans Daytona Hypercars) class that will not be in IMSA until next year.
Formula 2 and SST-45 class powerboat racing on the Manatee River. The track was less than 1 mile in length, bridges and spectator boats on either side, and top speeds of 120 mph while skirting on the surface of the water...gives me a new perspective on the Sebring adage "respect the bumps". Oh, and a drag race/"Le Mans" style start.
The start of the 2022 IMSA calendar...and the big news is the qualifying race at the Roar before the 24 that determined positions for the historic 24 hours to come the following weekend. It was also the last time these DPi cars will see the high banks of the historic Daytona International Speedway.
The inaugural 24H Series at Sebring Raceway surely was memorable. From the heroics of the organizers, to the bravery of the drivers...some without night practice, to the weather-related red flag...It was an event to remember.
The final race of the 2021 IMSA calendar had many "lasts"...from last GTLM, to the last Mazda DPi entry, and more. A word of caution...the hills are no joke! Have no fear, Turns 10 and 10a have plenty of action AND scenery for a base camp near the fan zone, garages, and food/drinks.
Mini Coopers, Nissan 370z, and Toyota 87 racing...check. Porsche, Audi, BMW, and Bentley on the track simultaneously...got it. Oh, and it's at Sebring International Raceway...respect the bumps or you could find yourself into a barrier, wondering how things went so wrong. The bumps, my dear Watson, the bumps.
6 Hours at a track known by international drivers as "The Glen". The combination of mountains and overtakes is a sight that needs to be witnessed to be believed.
